Mathematical Investigation and Universal Design for Learning: Contributions to the Development of an Inclusive Curriculum for Mathematically Gifted Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
Directing discussions toward the construction of an inclusive curriculum in teaching practice is essential for the implementation of Specialized Educational Services (SES). This study analyzes how Mathematical Investigation (MI) aligns with the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), focusing on the education of students with high abilities/giftedness (HA/G) in Mathematics. It is assumed that the curriculum must be reconfigured whenever necessary, especially in the context of inclusion, acknowledging the invisibility of these students. This study is qualitative in nature, with an interpretative and exploratory approach. The data are derived from a master’s dissertation conducted within the context of SES with five HA/G students in Mathematics, in a remote setting, produced through exploratory MI tasks and analyzed based on Content Analysis. In this study, the categories were reinterpreted in light of UDL. The results show that MI fosters the active participation of HA/G students, expands the forms of representation of mathematical thinking, and values diversity, aligning with UDL principles. The study argues that articulating MI and UDL can contribute to the reconfiguration of pedagogical practices in SES, reinforcing the need to embrace diversity as a fundamental element in curriculum construction.
