Abstract

The Bilingual and Intercultural Border Schools Project (PEBIF) is an initiative by the Organization of Ibero-American States, in partnership with the Ministries of Education of Portugal and Spain, under the scientific coordination of the Universities of Aveiro and Complutense of Madrid. The project is distinguished by its historical, social, and political significance, as it promotes a transboundary, intercultural, and plurilingual educational perspective aimed at regional development and the integration of the two countries. It seeks to strengthen the languages and cultures of the region as individual, social, professional, and educational values. Centred on the continuous professional development of teachers, the first edition of PEBIF took place between May 2021 and October 2022, involving 37 teachers from 10 Portuguese and Spanish schools in a 50-hour course. This training process is the focus of our research, in which data were collected through various instruments (on-site monitoring, researcher diaries, recordings of synchronous sessions, among others), culminating in the document “Multimodal and Polyphonic Narratives of Border Research.” This article examines this document with the aim of understanding how teachers coordinated to create a conducive environment for the design and implementation of joint learning projects oriented towards plurilingual and intercultural education within their schools. The preliminary analysis revealed that cross-border relationships among teachers were shaped by four main dimensions: linguistic-communicative, relational, sociocultural, and curricular. This article focuses on the relational dimension, highlighting its central role in the ongoing professional development process within these Lusophone-Hispanic border regions.

Maria Helena Araújo e Sá, Universidade de Aveiro

Maria Helena Araújo e Sá is Full Professor at the Department of Education and Psychology (DEP) of the University of Aveiro (Portugal), where she teaches and supervises master, doctoral and post-doctoral students in the area of Language Teacher Education. She obtained her PhD in Didactics in 1994 at the University of Aveiro (UA). She is the Coordinator of the Research Centre on Didactics and Technology in the Education of Trainers – CIDTFF (since 2016) and the Director of the Doctoral Programme in Education of the UA (since 2014). She is also a founding member of the Open Laboratory for Foreign Language Learning (LALE), which is co-coordinated up until 2019. She has been involved in several research projects and she has been publishing about issues related to intercomprehension, plurilingualism and interculturality.
Peer esteem indicators include: frequent invitations to give keynote presentations and seminars internationally and to participate in PhD defense presentation; frequent collaboration as a trainer with international language policy agencies (such as Latin Union, Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie); member of several editorial and advisory boards; external examiner of the PhD Politica, Educazione, Formazionelinguistico-culturali (Università degli Studi di Macerata, Italy); invitation to organize international Conferences as convener (e.g.: IALIC 2014, International Association of Languages and Intercultural Communication).
